Soul's Remnant Beginner Guide

Everything you need for your first hours in Soul's Remnant: what to do after spawn, how dungeons and death work, the keybinds worth memorizing, and how life skills fit into your progression.

Overview

Soul's Remnant is a free-to-play 2D platformer MMORPG from developer Chaomoon, live in Steam Early Access since August 13, 2026. The current build features classless character building, 72+ combat and life skills, 1,000+ items, roughly 200 weapons, 700+ crafting recipes, around 100 monsters, 19 bosses, 3 dungeons, 200+ maps, and 150+ quests.

Early Access note: skills and numbers are still being rebalanced. Treat every value in this guide as a snapshot from Aug 15, 2026, and double-check against the current client and patch notes.

Your First 30 Minutes

Launch day spawn points are crowded. If other players are covering NPCs or quest givers, remember you can drop down or wall-jump out of the starting area — platforming is a real movement tool in this game.

1. Open your map first

Press M and check the region you are in. The map shows area resources and monster drop tables, so you know what is worth farming before you start swinging.

2. Learn a skill immediately

Press K to open the skill window, learn your first combat skill, and drag it onto your hotbar. Skills have their own independent experience bars and level up through use.

3. Take the slime kill quest

The spawn-area quest giver (Shepherd) hands out your first kill quests. Complete, loot, return, and claim equipment rewards.

4. Put potions on your hotbar

Drag potions into a quick slot before you need them. Getting hit while digging through your inventory is how new characters die.

Also worth doing early: visit the quest board and daily quest NPCs at Spawn, meet Kmitty and the Dungeon Essence exchange, and peek at the auction house and player shops to learn what the economy values.

Your First Dungeon

Dungeons are party content. You cannot enter solo — you must be in a party, and the party leader consumes a Dungeon Pass to open the run. Passes come in three difficulties:

  • Normal — the entry point. The community-recommended first dungeon is Normal Slime Garden.
  • Hard — stronger enemies, better rewards.
  • Extreme — the top difficulty, with the best drops and the harshest punishment.

Use P to open the party window, or ask in Discord / Reddit if your friends are not online. Movement skills that help with platforming are genuinely useful inside dungeons — this is still a platformer.

Death Penalty

Dying sends you back to Spawn and costs you 8% of your current level's experience and 3% of your Soul Crystals, per the official community wiki's beginner guide.

Night lasts roughly 22 minutes of in-game time (19:00–05:00 world time). The map darkens significantly, so light sources matter — plan risky trips around the clock with /time.

Survival Tips

  • Join a guild early. Guilds grant experience and drop-rate buffs, and the game is built around playing together.
  • Invest some points in CON. A little Constitution goes a long way while you are learning enemy patterns.
  • Carry a Return Crystal and a Campfire. The Campfire boosts HP and mana recovery for nearby players — but it cannot be placed inside dungeons or underwater.
  • Respect the death penalty. Bank Soul Crystals before dangerous runs; 3% hurts more as you get richer.

Skill macros

Combine up to 3 skills on one hotkey — they fire left to right. See the macro section of our tier list page.
Keybinds and values come from the official community wiki and launch videos, which note that some pages may be outdated. Verify in the current client before building habits.

Life Skills & Crafting

Life skills — fishing, mining, herbalism, and gathering — are unlocked through quests accepted from the Life Skill tab in the skill window. The common community advice is to start them around level 10, once your combat basics are stable.

Life skills cap at level 99 (combat skills cap at 20), and feeding the 700+ recipe crafting system is a core progression track, not a side activity. Fishing involves its own minigame; mining and gathering feed smithing, cooking, and equipment upgrades, which in turn feed the auction house and player shops.
